History:

The Down Under International Games began in 1998. Wrestling was one of the first sports to become a part of the Games. The 2009 Down Under Wrestling tournament will be the 12th year. There are wrestlers and teams from all over the United States that compete.

Participation:

  • Wrestlers compete in two international tournaments. There is an International Individual Tournament and an International Team – Dual Meet Tournament.
  • All wrestling is international freestyle.
  • Officials are from the USA and Australia .
  • Wrestlers from New Zealand and Australia have competed in prior tournaments.
  • A wrestling team consists of 16 participants

Award ceremony:

Individual -

    • Gold Medal – 1st
    • Silver Medal – 2 nd
    • Bronze – 3 rd
    • Everyone will receive a participation medal.

Team Dual Competition -

    • Trophy/ Gold Medals – 1 st
    • Silver Medals – 2 nd
    • Bronze Medals – 3rd

Recent Competition:

In looking at the Junior World Wrestling Championships that just finished up August 26, 2007 in Bejiing China, there were (4) Wrestlers from Australia that competed in this event, and this is the culmination of the summer wrestling season for all around the world!

Here are the Aussies who wrestled in the Down Under International Games this year, that competed, and their place finish. Just making it to that tournament is a huge accomplishment, and to place is even better!

  • Mehrdad Tarash, Finished in 23rd Place out of 32 Wrestlers
  • Gene Kapoufs, Finished in 16th Place ouf of 24 Wrestlers
  • James Lord, Finished in 28th Place, out of 28 Wrestlers
  • Mark Anthony, Finished in 20th Place, out of 28 Wrestlers
